Tornadoes, wind and heavy rain, Tornadoes, wind and heavy rain top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the weather events that happened on April 28.

1964 - A tornado destroyed a cottage and downed trees north of Newaygo.

1986 - An F2 tornado hit Saginaw County at 2:33pm which cost $2.5 million in damages.

1990 - Record high temperatures of 77° and a warm low of 53° occurred at the Marquette Weather Forecast Office in Negaunee Township.

1991 - A restaurant was destroyed and a hardware store was unroofed as a tornado moved along the northwest edge of Hart in Oceana County.

2002 - After flooding in the western U.P. and record heat about a week to two weeks before, a daily record snowfall of 8.5 inches occurred at Weather Forecast Office in Marquette along with a record daily cold high temperature of 32° which was also set in

2004 - A 60 mph thunderstorm wind gust was reported 14 miles northwest of Ironwood in the mid-evening. Two large trees were broken off 2 miles west of Silver City in the mid-evening and several trees were blown down in Silver City. As a cold front approached from the west, scattered thunderstorms broke out over western Upper Michigan late in the evening. A few of these thunderstorms became severe, with damaging winds reported at Little Girl's Point in Gogebic County, at Silver City, and near Champion. A large tree, 2 feet in diameter, was blown down 6 miles east of Champion. The storms dissipated as they moved east overnight.

2011 - Heavy rain that started on April 27 continued across Southeast Michigan. All locations received over an inch of rain during the two days, but many locations in the Saginaw Valley and Thumb had over 3 inches. Several roads in the Thumb region were closed. This rainfall helped to make it the third wettest April in Saginaw, fourth wettest in Detroit and the fifth wettest in Flint. The wet April assisted in making the spring of 2011 the wettest in Flint history, second wettest in Detroit, and the eleventh wettest in Saginaw.
