Ang Lee Tyrant, Ang Lee has agreed to Tyrant, a new FX pilot that will feature an American family “caught up in the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
THR reported on Thursday that the Life of Pi director, who has won three Academy Awards for his work in film, would focus his efforts on shooting the pilot for FX and serving as executive producer should the show be picked up as a series.
Tyrant came to Lee from Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff of Homeland fame and Craig Wright of Lost.
Deadline noted that Lee agreeing to the project was particularly significant because he had been approached unsuccessfully on numerous occasions for TV work.
FX Networks president John Landgraf and Bert Salke, president of Fox 21 (producers), had trouble containing their excitement.
“Ang Lee has demonstrated time and again an ability to present characters with such depth and specificity that they reveal the universal human condition,” Landgraf said in a statement. “No one could be a more perfect filmmaker to bring Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Craig Wright’s Tyrant to indelible life.”
Salke added: “The fact that the brilliant Ang Lee has signed on to direct his first project for television speaks to the extraordinary nature of Tyrant. Ang Lee, Gideon Raff, Craig Wright and Howard Gordon are master storytellers at the height of their powers, and the material is incredible.”
No actors have been cast on the project at this time, but with Ang Lee helming Tyrant, it should only be a matter of time. Industry insiders expect the show to make liberal use of Middle Eastern actors, THR noted, but it appears many will be lining up for an audition.
(Of course, even if Lee does decide to cast you in a project, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll end up in the final product. Just ask Tobey Maguire.)
Lee has captured the Best Director Oscar twice for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi. His Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon also won Best Foreign-Language Film.
