Nissan recalls 123,000

Nissan recalls 123,000, Nissan is recalling certain 2013 Altima mid-size sedans because the spare tires may have been “significantly” over- or under- inflated.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 123,308. Affected vehicles were built from March 21, 2012 through March 26, 2013 at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi plant.

Documentation submitted by Nissan (PDF) to the NHTSA said that vehicles manufactured after these dates are not affected because the issue was corrected on March 26, 2013. Furthermore, no other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles are affected because the manual assembly operation was unique to this model.

The problem

The NHTSA bulletin said that significantly over- or underinflated tires “may fail without warning.” This condition increases the risk of a vehicle crash.According to Nissan, the company received a report from a dealer on March 8, 2013 of a spare tire rapid deflation while stored in the trunk. Nissan initiated an investigation and ultimately confirmed that the machine used to inflate the spare tires at the Canton plant had a malfunctioning pressure regulator, and that the pressure gauge used to check the pressure was incorrectly calibrated.

After an April yard audit discovered that 512 out of 5,441 vehicles had under- or over-inflated tires, Nissan determined that a safety-related defect exists and that a recall would be conducted.

As reported in The Detroit News and other media outlets, Nissan has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.

What Nissan will do

Nissan will notify owners to bring their vehicles to a Nissan dealer where the spare tires will be inspected and the tire pressure adjusted, as necessary. The service work will be performed at no charge. The Nissan safety recall is expected to begin May 3, 2013.

In the meantime, owners of 2013 Nissan Altima mid-size sedans with any questions or concerns may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
