Update on manhunt for stabbing of 8-year-old Leila Fowler, On April 28, NBC News reported that a manhunt was underway for an intruder that fatally stabbed a young girl. Although it was previously reported that she was 9-years-old, she was actually 8. Leila Fowler would have celebrated her birthday in June. The search for the killer continues and residents of Calaveras County were told to keep their doors locked.

Calaveras County deputies as well as law enforcement officials from neighboring counties, the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Justice are searching for the suspect. Leila Fowler, a resident of Valley Springs, was found stabbed in her home. Leila Fowler was discovered by her brother after he encountered a male intruder in the house around noon on April 27.

A neighbor told police that a man was seen running from the home after the incident. The suspect is either white or hispanic, approximately 6 feet tall, has a muscular build and was wearing blue pants and a black shirt at the time of the stabbing. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Since Saturday, officials have been conducting a door-to-door search and have also been looking in storage sheds, horse stables and attics.

On Sunday at 8:47 p.m., the sheriff's office issued an update,

"The search for a suspect in this case has continued overnight and through the day today. Overnight Sheriff’s Detectives and members of the California DOJ Bureau of Forensic Services executed a Search Warrant at the home where the homicide occurred. Evidence was collected at the scene including fingerprints and what investigators believe is DNA. At this same time Detectives were conducting follow up interviews with witnesses and family members."

The update stated that there is still no specific suspect and that there are more than 100 members of law enforcement on the case.

An autopsy of Leila Fowler will be conducted on April 29.
