Tornado, lightning and record heat

Tornado, lightning and record heat, top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the weather events that happened on April 26.

1915 - A record three-day spell of warm weather in the 80s peaks with a high of 88° at Grand Rapids and Lansing. For Lansing, this is the warmest temperature ever recorded in the month of April.

1976 – Canadian cold air settles into the Great Lakes behind a front. Both Muskegon and Grand Rapids set records for cold high temperatures, only reaching 39°. Lansing also sets a record for the coldest high temperature with 36°. Other records include Detroit 38°, Flint 37°, and Houghton Lake 35°.

1984 – Severe thunderstorms associated with an intense cyclone spawned a total of 47 tornadoes in two days from Louisiana to Upper Michigan. The tornadoes killed 16 people and injured 259 others. (Storm Data)

1990 - Record high temperatures of 85° and a record warm low temperature of 62° occurred at Weather Forecast Office in Marquette in Negaunee Township.

1996 - A record low high temperature of 31° occurred at Weather Forecast Office in Marquette with a daily record snowfall of 4.8 inches.

2009 - It was a sunny and very warm day with a record high of 84° set at Detroit.

2011 - Severe thunderstorms brought hail up to two inches in diameter. A tornado with peak winds estimated at 85 mph hit near Burnips in Allegan County, damaging buildings at a turkey farm.
