Rat-meat ring busted: Over 900 arrested in rat-meat ring scandal

Rat-meat ring busted: Over 900 arrested in rat-meat ring scandal, The Chinese authorities have arrested 904 people after a three-month campaign to find fakes in meat products. It turned out that the scammers sacrificed foxes, rats and mink instead of selling their beef and lamb meat, BBC reported on May 3, 2013.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, since Jan. 25 of this year, they have discovered 382 cases of crimes related to counterfeiting of meat and seized more than 20,000 tons of illegal products.

The agency Xinhua reports that, for example, offenders in the city of Wuxi in Jiangsu province, eastern China, processed meat from foxes, rats and mink by adding chemicals, and then selling it in the markets as something else entirely. This practice generated more than 10 million yuan (1.62 million dollars).

Other manufacturers also injected water into the meat and even sold sick animals.

In recent months, another scandal broke involving the falsification of meat. Health authorities in several countries found horse meat in burgers, lasagna, meatballs and other frozen products. The products were sold in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, UK, Portugal, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Sweden and other countries. The discovery caused a great impact in Europe, because horse meat is not usually eaten there.
