Sen. kelly ayotte erica lafferty

Sen. kelly ayotte erica lafferty, Erica Lafferty, the daughter of slain principal Dawn Hochsprung of Sandy Hook Elementary School, confronted Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) on Tuesday for voting against expanding background checks, reported NBC News (video below).

“You had mentioned that day the burden on owners of gun stores that the expanded background checks would cost," said Erica Lafferty during a town hall meeting. "I am just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn’t as important as that.”

Sen. Arroye did not answer Lafferty's question about the gun stores that she had previously claimed, but repeated the merits of debating gun control.

“Erica, I, certainly let me just say, I’m obviously so sorry," said Sen. Ayotte. "And I think that ultimately when we look at what happened in Sandy Hook – I understand that’s what drove this whole discussion – all of us want to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Sen. Arroye, who voted against background checks, also said how she wanted to strengthen background checks: "Where we are right now, my focus has been on wanting to improve our current background check system."

Sen. Ayotte also claimed expanding criminal background checks wouldn’t have stopped the Sandy Hook school shooting; however, Lafferty never said that it would, but rather lobbied on behalf of other families who will likely be affected by the gun murder of a loved one.

According to Public Policy Polling, Sen. Ayotte has a negative approval rating of 44 percent. Also, 50 percent of New Hampshire voters said that her “no” vote against expanded background checks would make them less likely to support her re-election.
