Daryl washington assault, Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington's offseason is going from bad to worse.
Washington has already been suspended for the first four games of the 2013 regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Washington is currently under investigation by the Phoenix, Arizona police department after a woman claims she was assaulted by the Pro Bowl linebacker in a domestic incident on Wednesday, the Arizona Republic reports.
Thus far, no details of the alleged incident have been released, but Washington has released the following statement (via Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910):
"These are serious accusations that we are closely monitoring. Until all the facts are determined, and out of respect for the process, we will decline any further comment at this point.
"Washington is arguably the most important member of a very good Cardinals defense. Over his first three seasons in the NFL, Washington has amassed 319 tackles, 15 sacks and four interceptions.
Last September, the Cardinals signed Washington to a four-year, $32 million extension that included $5 million in guaranteed money. Washington responded to that extension by leading the Cardinals with 134 tackles, including 15 for a loss, with nine sacks and an interception while logging 97.96 percent of the Cardinals' defensive snaps. Washington was also added to the NFC's Pro Bowl roster as a "Super Bowl replacement" for the pair of San Francisco 49ers who were unable to play.
Washington's four-game suspension will cost him over $564,000 in base salary and the Cardinals may seek to recoup over $216,000 in prorated amounts from the two signing bonuses that Washington has received from the franchise in his brief career.
The Cardinals have already made a slight tweak to Washington's extension, pushing a $10 million option bonus that had been due in 2013 to the 2014 season. Should the allegations this week result in an arrest leading to a conviction and further discipline from the NFL, the Cardinals may have to decide whether or not to pick up that option bonus next offseason.
