Oldest zoo zebra dies: Zebra born in 1975 euthanized in Portland, Ore.

Oldest zoo zebra dies: Zebra born in 1975 euthanized in Portland, Ore., Citation, the oldest zoo zebra, died at the age of 37 at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, Ore. Monday night, FOX12 Oregon reports May 2. She was born in 1975 at the Kansas City Zoo and relocated to the Oregon Zoo in 1999. She was the longest-living U.S. zebra.

Citation shared her captivity in Portland with vultures, kudu, gerenuk, ducks and one “ill-tempered Egyptian goose."

Monday night zookeepers noticed the zebra wasn't feeling well. She was down and veterinarians weren't able to help her stand on her own. The zoo didn't want the old zebra to suffer, so Citation was humanely euthanized.

Although her death was looming due to her advanced age, it's not easy on the staff. They will miss her sweet disposition. She was believed to have been named after the Triple Crown racehorse winner, Citation, from 1948.
