New manatee speed zones to be enforced by Flagler deputies starting today

New manatee speed zones to be enforced by Flagler deputies starting today, The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office will be enforcing speed limits on the water in three new manatee zones along the Intracoastal Waterway in May. Flagler County Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Bob Weber says deputies “…will be out in force…” May 1 through May 5 this week, educating boaters and issuing tickets if boaters are exceeding the speed limit in the manatee areas. Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfe said, “It’s important that boaters travelling along the Intracoastal Waterway understand where the new manatee zones are and that the new speed limitations have been established for their safety as well as for the protection of these marvelous creatures.”

The new Flagler County manatee zones were created by the State of Florida, in an effort to help protect manatees from collisions with vessels. The speed limit in the manatee area will also be enforced by the Florida Wildlife Commission.
