Tiny 'alien' skeleton: Puzzles scientists, 9 percent shows 'non-human' bones

Tiny 'alien' skeleton: Puzzles scientists, 9 percent shows 'non-human' bones, A tiny "alien" skeleton puzzled scientists after research was conducted to learn more about the discovery made at Chile's Atacama Desert 10 years ago. NBC News reports April 30 that the six-inch skeleton has been speculated to be a preterm fetus, a stillborn or a deformed child. It's even possible the individual may have died at six or eight years of age.

DNA, X-rays, and digital scans have been run on the "alien" skeleton. It had 10 rib bones instead of the typical 12. Nothing specifically indicated the skeleton wasn't human, but it had a variety of deformities -- especially the mid face, jaw, and forehead.

Genome sequencing informed scientists that all but nine percent of it was human. That could be attributed to "degradation, artifacts from lab preparation of the specimen or insufficient data," the report said.

It's unclear how old the bones are, but scientists believe the individual died at least a few decades ago.

The alien-like skeleton is determined to be human who had a number of severe deformities. It remains a medical mystery since a lot of questions haven't been answered.
