38 die in mental hospital fire: Russian psychiatric nurse saves 2 patients, Up to 38 people died in a mental hospital fire and the only three survivors are a nurse and the two patients that she rescued. Among the 38 people who died in the Russian psychiatric hospital fire were 36 mental patients and two doctors, reported CBS News on April 25, 2013.
“Health Ministry officials said the one-story hospital housed patients with severe mental disorders.”
According to Russia Today’s video report, the only three survivors of Friday’s early morning fire are three people; a nurse and the two patients that she saved. However, no further details about the three survivors are provided by officials at this time.
The fire in the mental hospital which is located about a two-hour drive from Moscow began around 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. By the time emergency crews arrived, the fire had already engulfed the one-story psychiatric hospital.
Russia Today’s news reporter Tom Barton is reporting from the scene while smoke is still rising from the building. “The blaze reportedly erupted in a wing providing special treatment to patients.”
So far, two likely causes for the fire are being investigated; a faulty electrical circuit or the possibility that one of the people in the psychiatric hospital had been smoking.
The high death toll of 38 people in the mental hospital is being attributed to the fact that the windows of the mental hospital had bars in front of them in order to prevent patients from escaping and the fact that many of the patients had been under medication when the fire began.
Tom Barton commented that out of the 38 people that died in the mental hospital only 13 bodies have been recovered so far. Forensic experts are going into the building in order to collect DNA samples from the remains in order to identify the other victims.
