Amagansett man charged in bus ticket forgery

Amagansett man charged in bus ticket forgery, A man from Amagansett stands accused of trying to catch a free ride along the Hampton Jitney last week and is now facing felony charges after he was found with counterfeit bus tickets, Southampton Town police said Monday.

Stratford Skalkos, 68, was arrested at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, after he arrived on a Hampton Jitney bus from New York City to Bridgehampton, police said.

Bus line employees reportedly became suspicious of Skalkos after he presented what they described as a “fake” Hampton Ambassador Value ticket, with an approximate value of $45, said police. Officers were then called to the company’s office in Southampton, where they found Skalkos to be in possession of a number of fraudulent bus tickets, a police news release said.

During that incident, officers also recovered “what appeared to be the personal information of other unrelated individuals,” which they said Skalkos was in possession of. He was placed under arrest at the scene and charged with one felony count of second-degree forgery and theft of services, a misdemeanor.

After being held overnight in police custody, Skalkos was arraigned Thursday at Southampton Town Justice Court, where he was held in lieu of $7,500 bail. County jail records show that as of this writing, he has not posted bail and remains in custody.

Anyone with information about the case or related criminal activity is urged to call Southampton Town detectives at 631-702-2230.
