Castro daughter to U.S.: Mariela Castro to receive award, It was reported on April 30, 2013 , that Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro, is to visit the U.S. to receive an award for her gay rights advocacy. She will be presented with the award at a conference put on by the Equality Forum on civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

"Mariela Castro is the niece of retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro. She is the director of Cuba’s National Center for Sex Education and the country’s most prominent gay rights activist."

Initially the U.S. State Department denied her permission to visit on Thursday. This decision was reversed on Tuesday. When asked for a reason the reported reply was, "The State Department does not comment on visa records, which are confidential."

The Equality Forum holds an international conference on LGBT right annually. This year's conference is featuring Cuba as its spotlight nation. Mariela Castro is also noted for training Cuba's police on LGBT relations and working to legalize same-sex unions.
