Manti Te'o not picked: Linebacker fails to land a home in NFL's first round

Manti Te'o not picked: Linebacker fails to land a home in NFL's first round, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o was not picked by any NFL teams in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft Thursday night. The non-selection shouldn’t come as entirely unforeseen, given Te’o’s disappointing showing in the BCS championship game, coupled with the entire Lennay Kekua bogus girlfriend story.

Fox Sports reported April 26 that Te’o’s draft stock further took a tumble after Te'o only posted a 4.82 40-yard dash time at the Scouting Combine.

Eric Galko of Sporting News said despite Te’o’s “great football IQ,” and being able to adjust and respond well to coverage versus run plays, Te’o “lacks great range, struggles to adjust off of man-blocking guards and doesn’t regain his balance well on the interior against downhill blockers. He’ll likely need a 3-4 defense to have NFL success, and even then he’s no lock to be a three-down player.”

Te’o was at the center of attention earlier this year for his alleged pseudo-relationship with a girl that did not exist. Te’o insisted that the report of his deceased “girlfriend” was a complete hoax.

The elaborate hoax that gripped the nation and painted Te’o as an imprudent athlete has been the source for multiple comedic spoofs, including this Saturday Night Live sketch.

Te’o is not in New York City in attendance for the draft. He is at home in Hawaii, waiting for his call, which will likely come today in the second or third round.
