Redskins name change: Washington council member demands team change name

Redskins name change: Washington council member demands team change name, A Redskins name change is being sought by a Washington D.C. Council member. According to The Washington Post on April 30, Council member David Grosso wants the name changed because he calls is "A derogatory, racist name."

Sports teams named after Native Americans have faced scrutiny over the last decade, with one college in North Dakota ordered by the NCAA to change their name or no longer receive consideration from the college football association. Many tribe in North Dakota came to the school's defense, and called it an honor and not a derogatory move, but because one tribe refused to give its consent, the school had to change the name.

The Washington Redskins, along with the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians, have been criticized for years because they use team names referring to Native Americans. David Grosso, an independent, demands a Redskins name change because he said it is an embarrassment for Washington.

He plans to introduce a new policy to order the name change because Washington should not "tolerate commercial or other use of derogatory terminology relating to any people’s racial identity." His idea for a Redskins name change would be to the Washington Redtails, in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen.
